Chalmette Railroad Incident

U.S. Risk Management personnel responded to a railroad accident that occurred as a tractor trailer was hit by a train at a crossing in Chalmette, Louisiana. Several thousand gallons of unleaded gasoline was released into the surrounding soil adjacent to and beneath the railroad tracks. A short period after the initial emergency response activities were finished, USRM personnel collected soil samples from the spill area. Based on the results, USRM identified impacted soils for removal and disposal at a permitted solid waste facility. To facilitate free product removal from surficial soils, USRM installed a French drain system in the uppermost soils adjacent to the railroad tracks. To address soils remaining in place beneath the tracks, USRM has designed an air sparging / soil vapor extraction system to remove volatile organics.
